Enthusiasm, happiness, joy, hopes, warmth of relations, overcoming difficult or sad moments...
What brings all of these aspects to the routine lives of the people? Yes, I am talking about a magical tradition called 'FESTIVALS'. This is what it offers to people, society and environment. I hope that everyone will accept he power of festivals.
Spring brings lots of new hopes to the environment and people all over the world. India has its very old festival to mark the startup of the spring season. It marks the end of the lunar year. The name of the festival is 'HOLIKOTSAV', popularly known as'HOLI'. It is also called as a festival of colors.
This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Falgun month (Falgun is the last month as per Hindu lunar year). Holi is celebrated as a symbol of the good over the evil. Hence the main theme of the festival is that people make bonfires at various places in the open air or on small grounds of the city, town or villages.
Nowadays we can't find much of empty space to celebrate such festival however people still try to accommodate as little a space to light up the bonfire. Usually children and young ones try to pile up the firewood well in advance before the festival in order to have enough fire. People of different ages and families gather around the bonfires and pray. And they follow some traditional rituals like women offering the coconuts in to the fire and perform other rituals around the fire.
If we dig out the history of this festival then it dates back to even thousands of years ago (as early as B.C. 200-300) as per the authentic historical findings. So old is the theme of this tradition.
Historical references points out that this festival was adopted and celebrated by most of the famous king dynasties who ruled from ancient India to medieval India and till date existing members of such kingdoms have high importance for this festival.
